Beach Day layout for Apron Strings

Quick post to get this in before the deadline.
I took full advantage of my day off to laze around in my pj’s until noon, lounge around on the couch all afternoon and then zip this off before dinner.

This is for the following challenges over at Apron Strings: their 5 on Friday and Sketch on Wednesday challenges.

This is the sketch we were given (a Sketchy Thursday sketch from June 16th).

The 5 things we were to use were:

1 sheet of cardstock

1 sheet of patterned paper

1 journalling tag

1 set of buttons

something round

In this close up you can see my buttons (Basic Grey) and one of my ‘something round’.

As I was editing the pictures I noticed that I forgot a title. Doh! I will probably add it later. Not sure where though as I kind of like the layout as is. Oh, and I sprayed a little mist on my white cardstock (probably against the rules but the white looked too white!)

Supplies used: White cardstock from Michael’s (12×12 Recollections Basics probably); grey and pink patterned paper is American Crafts I Do – Delphinium and Craft Fair – Rose McGrain; blue cardstock circle was from my stash; Basic Grey buttons; Jillibean Soup Journalling Sprouts – circle, brown; and the mist is Tsukineko Walnut Ink in Eucalyptus.

Well, my day off is pretty much over so I’d better post this then get a load of laundry into the dryer so my kids have clothes to wear tomorrow! See ya!

Two cards and one layout

First off, I added supply lists to this post and this post. Sorry they weren’t there to begin with!

As my title suggests, lately I’ve managed to complete two cards and one layout. In the past week or so. Not much but with all the other stuff that’s going on around here, I’m impressed I’ve managed to get into my craft room at all! Without further ado, here they are.

Supplies used: Basic Grey 6×6 pad in Bittersweet, various Basic Grey alpha stickers; 5×7 Recollections blank cards in cream.

These pictures were sitting out waiting to be scrapped during the LOAD challenge in May. Obviously, they didn’t make it onto a page then!

I used the sketch from Day 18 of 28 Days of Sketches as my jumping off point but changed it quite a bit. The other birthday layouts I’d done for Paige’s 5th bithday all had a kraft cardstock base so I wanted to do the same here but not have it so prevelant as my other layouts. I layered the patterned paper overtop to minimize the kraft. Then it was a matter of photo placement and embellishments.

For my title I cut out the letters using my Cricut in both the dark pink and black and then layered them slightly off centre to give a dropped shadow effect to the title. I’ve seen this done over at Nichol Magouirk’s site and loved it! She does these great “from start to finish” videos of her layouts that you really have to check out!

I’m trying to get comfortable clustering embellishments. The space next to this big picture of Paige’s cake looked empty so I started playing around and came up with this little grouping. I’m quite happy with it!

Supplies used: kraft cardstock; patterned paper is from KI Memories – Friends pack; journalling tags – Best Creation Inc. Jubilee; butterfly punch – Pop up Butterflies Edge Punch by Martha Stewart/EK Success; pink and black cardstock from my stash, small embellishments from ATD Celebrate it pack.

Okay, that’s all for right now. I have a pile of pictures from various preschool field trips and Father’s Day to sort through. I’m sure some of them will make their appearance in my 5 on Friday post. I am going to try to do that one tomorrow as Friday is the last class ever at Paige’s preschool, plus we are having a huge Farewell BBQ that evening at the preschool, PLUS I’ve agreed to get up at the crack of dawn to set up for the closing out garage sale at the preschool the next morning. If I get a chance to check my email on Friday I’ll consider myself lucky. Writing a post is totally out of the question!

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to the end of school and the beginning of some quieter days. Maybe even days where I can get some scrapping done!!

Project 12 – May 2011

Hello again!
Not sure what happened to my 5 on Friday post … kind of whizzed through the whole weekend without even thinking about it. My apologies to those who like to read it. Not that I would know who that is anymore as Blogger is still not allowing comments on my Blog as well as me to comment of other Blogs (Roxy, I’m following you still!!)

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate Vista? Nothing but issues with this laptop since Day 1 and now that I mistakenly “upgraded” to Internet Explorer 9 I’ve had nothing but bugs on top of bugs. Grr!! If only I could afford to get a new laptop!!

But I digress … back to the reason I am writing this evening (and studiously ignoring the fact that the Canucks are getting their butts KICKED by the Bruins. Double GRR!!) … my layout for May 2011. In an effort to not leave it to the last possible minute, I started working on it a couple days ago. I just put the finishing touches on it (it was 3-0 and Greg had changed the channel in disgust so I figured I needed something to take my mind off the massive disappointment that was brewing!)

Here’s the sketch that we were given.

And here’s what I came up with.

More apologies are in order as I realized as I was editing my pictures that I forgot to take ones of each side. Oh well. There were a lot of “whoopsies” moments on this layout!

But first a few words about what I did. I noticed that the pictures I wanted to use for this month (I know, I know, I’ve used more than the sketch calls for … surprise, surprise!) had a lot of red and blue in them. I put my kraft cardstock aside (gasp!) and reached for two different papers for the base. I’ve seen it done many times quite successfully and while I usually like the more symmetrical look of having the same base colour on both sides, I decided to go for it. Then it was just fun time as I pulled out my Basic Grey stash to chose additional patterned paper.

Here are some closeups. The first one is of the journalling block I made.

I actually made the shipping tags using a Staples one as a template. I butted them next to each other and then stamped my journalling lines. I used some of the striped paper at the top and punched my holes through it. The embroidery floss tied through the top is the same as that which I used on the hand stitching. I had fun with my embellishments too! I liked the row of flowers in the sketch but my journalling was there so I grouped some flowers on the right and then used some BG Elements stickers. Like the birdie?

The top left corner got a grouping of flowers too!

A few words are needed about the title. More specifically the crooked letters!

I was in the process of experimenting with which alphas I wanted to used so I just lightly (so I thought) placed the letters down. Then I got called away … probably some kid related thing. Darn those kids of mine! Always interrupting my creative process!! LOL! When I came back to it (the next day), I discovered that the letters were pretty solidly adhered. Double darn! What to do?! I decided to just leave them as they were. The pictures were of the kids goofing around so I thought the crooked letters reflected that.

Maybe.

Well, there you have it. Another month completed. I was hoping to put something in June’s about attending the Stanley Cup parade but … maybe next year. Sigh.

A Baby Album using 28 Days of Sketches

I can finally reveal what I have been working on for the past week or so.

It’s a Baby Scrapbook for Paige’s preschool teacher, Kari. She’s due in September and she’s expecting a boy. Working with blue was a new experience for me to say the least! With 3 girls I am very much in a pink world!!

Here are the pages of the album.

For this one I used the sketch from Day 15.

Because I wanted to have 4×6 photo mats I had no room for the journalling so I added this little hand made shipping tag behind one of the mats. The pink sticky notes have suggestions for Kari as to how to use the album.

I’ve used these banner tags on other pages but left them blank. Here though I had a specific vision for the page so decided to go ahead and write little captions on each. The top left one if for an ultrasound picture (or more if they’re small), the one below it is for a picture of the nursery and the one with the pink sticky on it says ” That’s you in there!”. Kari insists she’s not going to be taking any pictures of her baby belly but I hope she changes her mind!

This is based on the sketch from Day 4. It had several smaller pictures on the left hand side but I changed it to be 2 4×6 ones instead. I added some plain white cardstock along the bottom for journalling the birth story and then used letter stickers to highlight the birth weight and times etc.

For this page I used the sketch from Day 19, changed it to suit larger photos and then made a quasi mirror image so that it was a 2-pager. I know it looks vastly different from the original but really, I started with sketch 19!

This page and the next 11 pages are all based on the sketch from Day 5. I did these mass production style so that they’d all have a coherent look and feel as well as a time saving strategy. Once the bases were done I went back and added the embellishments, titles and journalling blocks in 2 month sections. That way, if the album stays the way it is, the two months will relate to each other. But if the months get moved around (if other pages get added in between months) it will still work.

Here are months 2 – 12:

The last page I did (so far) is about his 1st birthday party. Hopefully Kari will remember to include one of those classic face covered in cake shots!!

Ths is based on the sketch from Day 11 but I moved the title and journalling to the top.

In place of one of the pictures I added this cute little pocket I found at Michael’s (see below).

The journalling blocks have some prompts written into them. Things like the date and location of the party, who came, and what his favourite present was.

Well, that’s all I have so far. I am planning to add a few more pages for special holidays like 1st halloween, 1st Christmas, 1st Easter … you get the idea. But time contraints being what they were this was as complete as I could get it in time for her shower last night.

Yeah, I know, it’s blurry. Doh!

Supplies used in this album: (I’m sorry but I forgot to note the album itself. I got it at Michael’s and it’s a 3-ring binder style. Maybe Recollections?) Patterned paper all came from a DCWV pad – the Green Tea Stack. Cardstock was a combination of what was in my stash and some from an ATD 12×12 cardstock pad in pastels. Alphas (I used a whole bunch of different types): Basic Grey, Making Memories – Toil and Trouble corrugated brown and Sticker Shimmer Alphas in Diva Dark Blue, Recollections, Frances Meyer, Thickers – yellow vinyl, white glitter, bronze glitter (Dear Lizzy), and Scenic Route chipboard alphas in brown. Embellishments: Martha Stewart Ribbon Style tags, mostly Basic Grey buttons, MS Findings in Turquoise, various Celebrate It ribbons, MS Blue Felt Boy Borders, Recollections baby boy stickers, Me & My Big Ideas stickers – Kay Baby Boy and FD Brand New Baby, Little Yellow Bicycle 10 things Pocket – Baby boy, MS Leaf Flourish labels and Calling Card labels, MS Grosgrain bow stickers, and Staples tags in white. Punches: MS Punch all over the page Classic Butterfly, MS Butterfly stamp and punch, EKSuccess Open Scallop edge punch, MS Bubble Bath punch around the page punch. Last but not least, the month numbers and the stars and balloons (on Month 12) were cut out on my Cricut using the George Basics cartridge.

5 on … er … Saturday

First off, sorry this is not only NOT posted on Friday but also, posted really late on Saturday! I had grand intentions of getting this up this morning since we had a “nothing” day (very rare and appreciated all the more because of it!) but … I was scrapping and forgot. And I can’t even show you what I was working on either! Soon, I promise!
So, let’s get started.

1. 28 days of sketches

Remember my cryptic reference to yet another class/challenge I’d signed up for in May that I’d been neglecting? Well, I finally used one of the 28 beautiful sketches from Lisa Day (no relation – LOL!) Here’s my layout which continues the theme of Paige’s 5th birthday and the pink and kraft colour scheme from an earlier layout (see it here.) It’s based on the sketch from Day 12 – I can’t show you because it’s in PDF and I’m not sure I can how to do that. 🙂

I don’t normally use a lot of black in my layouts but I really like how it frames the pictures here. I think I may start using it more!

Supplies used: Sketch is Day 12 of 28 Days of Sketches; cardstock is from Michael’s; patterned paper is SEI Chocolat Cherie; tab is SEI Winnies Walls tabs & frames; vellum quote is from the American Traditional Designs Celebrate It bundle; brads are My Minds Eye, Lush rhinestone brads – blue set; and last but not least, the #5 is cut with my Cricut on Basic Gray paper (can’t remember which line) using George Basics cartridge.

2. Delta Gymnastics Grand Opening

Marley, Paige and LC have been taking classes through the Delta Gymanstics Society forever (it seems). They have just recently moved into their new facilty beside the Ladner Leisure Centre and we attended the Opening Ceremonies last Saturday. Let me say a couple things about both the new facility and the ceremonies before I show you the pictures.
First, the new facility … how many ways can I say that it is AWESOME!!! It’s easily twice the size with double the amount of equipment. Ceilings are higher, changing rooms are WAY bigger and the waiting areas (yes, areas) are spacious enough for all the kids, strollers and parents that mill about. Plus (and it’s a huge one) it’s within walking distance from our house!!!
Okay, now the Opening Ceremonies … what a gong show! Let me clarify. I was under the impression (from various conversations and advertisements) that it would be a quick 30 minute speachifying/ribbon cutting thing then there would be cake. Mmmm … cake! What really happened was an hour of speaches from every known dignitary in Delta plus another 30 minutes of gymnastics demonstrations THEN the cake. The girls were climbing the walls! Heck, I was climbing the walls!! If I’d known how many speakers they was going to be I’d have shown up late!
But enough whining … some pictures …

3. Ladner May Days

Okay, so I’m doing the Time Warp here a little bit … please bear with me! Last Friday was the opening day of Ladner May Days which meant Loonie Night at the Midway! Marley was all over the rides but we ran into the usual reluctance with Paige and LC. Unfortunately for Paige, she is now too big for the rides she likes (read: isn’t scared to death of!) and too scared of the rides she IS big enough for. I’m sure you can see how the night went!!
Okay, pictures ..

After a harrowing first attempt at the rides, we stopped for a sugar break. The girls had brought their own money to waste!

LC was pretty tentative about the cotton candy – maybe she’s onto something the rest of us should get on board with too! Super heated sugar that’s spun at super speeds until it resembles clouds in fun colours like pink and blue. Hmmm …

Marley chose a shaved ice which she promptly decorated with some of Paige’s cotton candy.

Shortly after this picture was taken she suffered severe buyers remorse and wanted a shaved ice like Marley’s. Tough lessons!

After the snack break we still had a pile of tickets left so Greg and Marley got busy! Here they are on the mini Hellevator. They liked it so much they did it twice!

Then Paige showed interest in the bumper cars. I think she just wanted to crash into Marley with impunity!!

And finally, the sizzler! Greg tried REALLY hard to convince Paige to go on too but … no dice!

With the last 2 tickets Paige and Marley rode the Dino train again. LC felt quite slighted!! Poor kid.

Sunday was the day of the May Days Parade so of course we went (in between swimming lessons and a birthday party!)

Ready with bags in hand for all the candy they are hoping to collect!

Hmmm … what’s wrong with LC?

Oh! It’s the Delta Police Pipe Band!

I don’t think that 50% Scottish heritage has kicked in yet!

This is where Li’l Rascal’s Preschool has been for the past, like, 50 years.

Sigh.

We just didn’t have the heart to participate this year. What’s the point?

And now for something completely different …

… apparantly we are taking our hockey very seriously this year! In case it’s not clear, that’s an Orca eating a Bear! Go Canucks!!

And this little beauty. Not sure what he was selling but it was a good laugh!

4. Ballet

Thursday was Marley’s ballet recital day …

I’m going to chalk up the attitude I got when I tried to take her picture to pre-show jitters.

5. Hip hop

And then, because Friday wasn’t busy enough, we went to see Marley’s school show off their new Hip Hop skills. They’d been taking lessons all week and Marley had been giving us sneak peaks so I was pretty interested to see what her class had been working on.

6. Ballet … oops, that makes 6!

Friday night was Paige’s turn for the real deal. I was the Mommy Helper backstage so the other two girls got to spend the night with Greg at his Union dinner and complimentary hotel room. It was nice to have some one-on-one time with Paige!
She did awesome!! I was concerned about her nerves – as I’ve mentioned ad naseum, she is our anxious child – but I was blown away by her behaviour. She was the life of the party backstage!. Sharing the snacks we’d brought. Showing her friends her V-Reader. Literally vibrating with anticipation!

She was much more compliant!

Tomorrow is the final show. Both Marley and Paige are dancing and Greg and I will be watching along with Grandma and Grandpa Day. Greg’s hoping to escape at Intermission but I am looking foreward to seeing the whole show! Not sure what LC’s going to be doing …. if she’s allowed to sit on Greg’s lap then that’s where she’ll be for the first half but … well, we’ll see.

5 on Friday – May 27th

Wow, typing that date really gave me a start! Are we really almost at the end on May already?! Sheesh! Where is 2011 going?

Well, onwards …

1. Kelowna/Vernon weekend trip

Last weekend we headed into the interior for a wedding celebration in Vernon. It was for Josh – my sister-in-law’s brother. He got married in England at the end of April (right about the time of another big-ish wedding you may have heard about, LOL) but we couldn’t swing that. Andrew (my brother in case you didn’t know) took his family and I was looking at some pictures from the trip today on Facebook. Made me really miss my family overseas!

But I digress … here are some pictures from the weekend.

We were a bit early for the party so we let the girls play on the playground nearby – under strict instructions NOT to get dirty!! Of course, the swings were the first thing to attract their attention.

And just to prove there really was a party going on … here they are tucking into the yummy food!

Next day we went to a parade! Waiting for it to start was fairly excrutiating!

And nerve wrecking as we kept seeing these ominous black clouds gathering.

His shirt wasn’t chosen with the weather in mind but it worked!

Marley got to give the YMCA mascot a high five.

Then Ogopogo made an appearance. LC loved saying Ogopogo!!

The parade ended with a couple of wrecked race cars (Hit to Pass type cars) revving their engines to the point of making clouds of smoke and sending bits of rubber flying. Paige was totally freaked out by them and had one of her fits. Poor kid is super sensitive to sight and sound. I’m starting to think we may need to see someone about it.

2. Scrapping on the road

My friend Roxy talked about how she’d put together kits to take with her so she’d still be able to keep up with her scrapping responsibilities during her recent move. I thought this was a great idea and since I forgot to make a card for the wedding before we left, I decided to take the supplies I’d need and do one once we got to Kelowna.

Here’s my kit.

I forgot to take a picture of the finished card (doh!) but I will definitely do this sort of thing again. Thanks Roxy!!

3. LOAD Catch up

I’ve been trying to get caught up on my LOAD challenges but it is slow going! On Monday I got several layouts finished (it was a stat holiday so Greg was around and willing to let me ignore him and the girls for much of the day!) Here they are – as you can see, I’m all over the place as far as the daily challenges!

Day 6 – Alignment

We were learning about how a page will look more professional, more “pulled together” if you make sure all your margins are equal. To demonstrate we were to take before and after pictures showing how common margins helped bring the page together.

This is my original “before’ picture.

But as I was getting ready to adhere stuff I decided to play around with it some more and see if I could make it any better. Here is my second “before” picture.

I liked this arrangement way better so got busy.

First I misted all the letters with Glimmer Mist in Pearl (not that you can see it in this picture!) and then put Martha Stewart glitter in Onyx on the flowers. Since I had to wait for all that to dry I decided to have some fun with my guache and added some paint drops onto the burgandy cardstock.

Once everything was dry I started sticking it all down and then added my journalling on little strips of white cardstock.

Supplies: Burgandy cardstock is probably Bazzil, the black, white and pink are just scraps; patterned paper is Heidi Grace – A Little Birds Table; I cut out the title and the flowers on my Cricut using the George Basics cartridge; bling is from Me & My Big Ideas.

Day 7 – Scraplifting

We were to pick a layout that we liked and scraplift it being sure to give the original creator the credit. Well, here is my inspiration – the May layout on my PageMaps calendar. It was done by Kimber McGray.

And this is my version.

Supplies: patterned paper – DCWV paper pack Nana’s Nursery Baby Girl; cream cardstock – Bazzil basics; green carstock from stash; border punch – MS Bubble Bath Punch around the page set; red tape from De Serres; word stickers – K&Co Small Wonders Girl words; alphas – Basic Grey.

Day 23 – Journalling. Scrap a story that is hard to tell.

I debated on whether or not to post this one as it is very personal but … in the vein of full disclosure, here it is.

Journalling reads: I initially deleted this picture as soon as I downloaded it from my camera. Could a more unflattering picture of me exist?! But then I recovered it and now I want to remember this moment always. This is the last time I will look like this! This is the last time I will be ashamed of a picture of me! From now on I will honour myself!

‘Nuff said!

Supplies: 81/2″ x 11″ cardstock from Michaels; Bella Blvd patterned papers (stripes and clouds); AC patterned paper (pink wood grain); blue wave (cut out on my cricut ages ago) and the scrap of blue carsdtock with the border punch were both found in my scraps drawer; alphas are Basic Grey.

Day 8 – Colour. Ground a layout in time using colour.

For me, what says 2011 is kraft cardstock. And the colour combo of brown and pink is very current too.

I placed these little jewels there to disguise the adhesive I used on the vellum. I love these little vellum quotes but figuring out the best way to attach them causes me grief!

Supplies: Kraft cardstock is just Michael’s basics; pink cardstock is from my stash – I think it’s Bazzils Tropicals; die cut (cut in half) is Best Creation Inc die cut paper in Bunny Love; candle border strip (which I fussy cut), cupcake, vellum word strip and title piece are from the Celebrate bundle by American Traditional Designs (found at Homesense); butterfly was cut out using my MS punch all over the page butterfly punch; gems are from MAMBI; and the curly border strip is from Echo Park’s Life is good.

I’m finding that this LOAD challenge is really great for pushing yourself to think in ways you normally wouldn’t and also to scrap a ton of pictures. As you can tell, I’ve been making progress on Paige’s baby albums with some of these layouts but I am also choosing to scrap more current pictures. I don’t have an album yet for the more current layouts – they are all sitting in a storage container waiting … for I’m not sure what. Me to be finished with the baby albums I guess. I’m way too much of a chronological scrapper!! Gotta relax and start creating albums for these.

4. Ballet, ballet and more ballet!

Marley and Paige’s ballet recital is fast approaching. On Wednesday they had their “technical rehearsal” which as far as I could tell was just to give them all a chance to see the auditorium and figure out where they’d all be standing during their number. Tomorrow is their Dress Rehearsal which means full costume, performance hair and makeup. Yes, I said makeup. But don’t worry, I am not turning this into an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras! They will get a little bit of lip gloss and that’s about it. I plan to get away with as little makeup on them for as long as I can!!

5. Ladner May Days

Our annual Ladner May Days takes place this weekend. (Great, something else to fit into what is becoming an unbelievably packed weekend!) Tonight is Loony/Toony night at the fair. IF the weather holds up (a really big if these days!) we will take the girls for some cheap(er) rides tonight. Tomorrow, after the dance dress rehearsal, Paige has been invited to participate in the Grand Opening of the new Delta Gymnastics facility (along with her gymnastics class) and then on Sunday (after swimming and before a birthday party) we are planning to take in the parade. The preschool opted to not be in the parade this year. As we are shutting down we just didn’t have the heart to do it. It’s so sad. But, on the upside, I actually get to watch the parade for the first time in about 5 years! Assuming it’s not pouring rain!!

Project 12 – April 2011

Ah, Project 12 … I confess to forgetting about you a tiny bit!
Last year the deadline for entry submissions was the 20th of the month and this year it is the 28th. Somehow the later deadline translates in my brain to “you’ve got PILES of time to get it done, don’t worry about doing it early?!” Then I find myself remembering – usually around the 20th – and I panic to get it organized, scrapped and submitted. Sigh.

So here we are. May 25th and I am finally getting around to submitting my layout for April. This is one of the ones I scrapped on Monday. Monday was a holiday here (Victoria Day – gotta love those long gone monarchs that allow us a day off work!) so I decided to pretty much ignore the family and get my scrap on!

This is the sketch we were given.

And this is my take on it.

I stuck pretty close to the sketch. I LOVED that it had so many pictures!! You know how hard I find it to narrow down which pictures I want to use!!

April around our house generally finds us in party mode for most of the month. Paige’s birthday is right in the middle of April and depending on when it falls, her birthday is very closely after or very closely followed by Easter. This year Easter was a week after and we also managed to squeeze in her birthday party too so it was a busy second half of the month!

Anyway, here are close ups of each side of the layout.

Supplies: kraft cardstock, Basic Grey (Olivia) patterned papers, MS punch around the page butterfly punch, butterflies are made of some Bella Blvd paper (the striped one), some Piggy Tales paper and some teal cardstock – all from my scraps drawer, the ribbon is from my stash, EKSuccess border punch, I can’t remember who the bling is by but I found it at Micheal’s and the alpha’s are Making Memories Shimmer alpha’s in black.
