Practical Scrappers February Sketch

Today over at Practical Scrappers we had fun with this gorgeous sketch from our very own Liz Chidester!
This is what I did with it.
Seeing as tomorrow is Valentine’s Day I went with a love note to my family but using the most recent pictures of them and tropical colours instead of traditional pinks and reds!
Here are some detail shots.

Thanks for stopping by! How are you going to be celebrating your loved ones tomorrow?

LOAD213 Day 12 – Someone Else’s Interests

Today Lain is featuring another layout by me in her LOAD video. The prompt was to scrap a time when you got “into” another person’s interest. I think we’ve all done it. The new boyfriend really likes baseball so we start watching all the games with him and actually learning players and stats. I may have been guilty of that exact thing in Universtity!! But this layout is not about baseball (or soccer ironically, even though that would be considered Greg’s one true passion!) It’s about my short Ultimate career. For those who are now shaking their heads and wondering what Ultimate is, it’s the game you play with a Frisbee (disk to the hard core ‘cus “Frisbee” is a trademarked name!)
Enough blabbing, here’s my layout.
I found these pictures of me on Greg’s computer. Action shots! This was my last season playing the game. As the journaling says, I started playing in 2000 at the urging of my brother and because I was looking for ways to get fit and meet boys. Well, mission accomplished! I met Greg on the Ultimate field in the summer of 2001 and with him started playing upwards of 3 times a week plus tournaments. So yes, I was in pretty great shape there for a bit! I even played through the early stages of my pregnancies – here I am possibly VERY early in Christine’s pregnancy. But the nausea soon put an end to any sort of physical activity!
Some detail shots for you.
Here’s a trick that I like to do. Use a work sticker as part of your title. It adds interest and is a great way of using up those word stickers!

Can’t seem to make a layout these days without some sort of paint, mists or other “messy” element!

A couple of shots to show you the layers I like to create. Using pop dots to raise part of the title is a good way to highlight that element.
Thanks for stopping by today. Are you participating in LOAD? If so, I’ll see you on the galleries! If not, why not try to use a word sticker in your title today or follow along with the prompt and scrap a time you immersed yourself in someone else’s interests? If you do either of these things, please leave me a comment so I can come and check out your work.
Have a wonderful, creative day!

Playing Along With Let’s Get Sketchy – February Week 2

Welcome to another Monday morning and another Let’s Get Sketchy challenge. This is the second sketch for February and it seems like a great time to remind you all that to be eligible to win each month’s prize you need to complete 3 of the 4 weekly sketches. You’ve got all month to get those sketches in so don’t panic if you think you’ve already missed a week!
And now onto my contribution.
I sort of switched the photo placements around but kept to rest of the sketch pretty much. This is Paige’s Kindergarten pictures. She’s still got those chubby little kid cheeks – so cute!! I liked the back ground texture in the sketch (below) so I used my Mister Huey’s to create a similar feel. Then backed it with a full piece of Stampin’ Up DSP. The blue totally matched the blue background in Paige’s picture! Plus it meas I’m using 2 full sheets of 12×12 paper! Woo hoo!! Stash bustin’ baby!!
Here’s the sketch TeamB is using this week.
And some detail shots.
I am really loving digging through my stash and finding (and USING) the products in it. These may not be the most recent releases but I truly don’t think that matters! I am compiling them in a way that is fresh and current so they feel fresh and current too.

Oh, and yes, the two hearts on this layout were leftovers from this layout. I always keep any extra shapes I’ve punched or die cut (and now I have a pretty little container to keep them in – see here) so when a layout calls for a little something, I have a stash at hand to dig through.

The journaling is on this little tag that I tucked behind the photos at the bottom of the layout. I liked that the card was a yellow grid because the colour matched Paige’s shirt and it felt “school-like”. Like a yellow legal pad or something. It’s the littlest details sometimes!
Thanks for coming to visit today. I’ve got several wonderful posts lined up this week and on Thursday I will also have an exciting announcement to make. Hope you come back for it!!
Happy Monday everyone. Hope you have a great week!!

LOAD213 Day 7 – Get Outside

Another day, another LOAD layout to share. I am the featured artist again today (aside: seeing my layouts on Lain’s videos gives me goosebumps, you know, the happy kind!) and my prompt was to scrap a nature photo. I don’t have a shortage of nature photos, but I was looking for one without the usual people in it (you know, the girls, Greg, etc) and those seemed a little bit harder to come by. Then I saw this one and I knew it was The One!
This was taken from the deck of the Boat House (UBC Rowing Club’s facility on the Fraser Slough in Richmond) when we were attending one of Greg’s friends’ weddings in the summer of ’09. It was SUCH a hot day that we spent most of that reception outside trying to get some sort of breeze to keep the kids cool (I think the AC had broken or something). Anyway, it led to some great sunset photos including this one. I love that you can see the moon too.

To play up on the colours of the sunset I created the piece of patterned paper you see here (the ripped one) by messily colouring lines of Gelatos, spritzing the paper liberally with water and then using my finger to blend the colours together. The rip came once the paper was dry. The original piece was too large and when I was  cutting it down to size it just seemed wrong to have a straight line. So … rrrrriiiip … and voila!

The wavy texture happened as the paper dried and I love it!

I found these flowers a while back in the $1 bin at Michael’s. Their colours were perfect for this!
Well, thanks for popping by today. Would love it if you left a comment telling me what you think or, if you’re registered in LOAD maybe I’ll see you on the message boards. I haven’t had a chance to hop on there yet as we have been in Mexico on a family holiday but I’m hoping that I’ll get on there today. I spent all day Wednesday dealing with my over flowing inbox(es) so maybe (after I do a mountain of laundry, figure out what we’re eating this week, shop for it, verify my work schedule …) I’ll be able to play a little bit now. Scrap even! Gasp!! I haven’t touched a single scrappy item in over a week and I’m starting to have withdrawal symptoms!!

LOAD213 – Day 6 Do It Now!

What page have you been putting off? Your wedding? Your child’s 1st birthday? Your own birthday – maybe a big one like your 30th or 40th?
That was the prompt that Lain gave me for today’s LOAD213 page.

At first I wasn’t sure that I had been putting off any pages. I’ve been pretty good at scrapping current photos lately as well as digging into that pile of “memories to be scrapped”. But … there’s always a ‘but’ isn’t there? … I have yet to start Christine’s baby album so that’s where this prompt led me.

And I came up with this.

My sister-in-law Christine threw me a surprise baby shower. What do you get a 3rd time Mom who knows she’s expecting her 3rd girl and therefore already has everything? Frozen meals!! I’m telling you, this was THE BEST gift anyone could have given me!!
I have used these papers in Marley and Paige’s baby albums so am keeping consistent and using them on Christine’s album too. Here are some detail shots.

Found some old Dear Lizzy chipboard stickers in my stash that were perfect for this soft colour palette.

Like the colour of an embellishment but the wording is wrong? No sweat! Just change it!!

Added this one to show you how some of the elements have been attached with pop dots.
Thanks for stopping by. If you’re participating in LOAD213 then I’ll see you on the message boards!

Let’s Get Sketchy Monday Reveal

Can you believe it’s February already? As I type this I am watching my nephews while my sister and brother-in-law celebrate their 9th Wedding Anniversary. We are all staying at a resort in Neuvo Vallarta enjoying a break from the cold of BC! Seems appropriate then (and completely by accident!) that the subject of my layout for today’s Let’s Get Sketchy reveal is Marley. Nine years ago today she wasn’t quite born yet. What a lot of changes in those 9 years!
But I digress, I hope you’ve checked out the rest of Team A’s examples for this week. This is the sketch we are all working with.
Another gorgeous one from our fearless leader, Brenshevia!
I came up with this.
I finally found pictures to go with some of the Teresa Collins line I bought last summer!
Here are some detail shots.

Well, I guess I don’t have too much to say today. Must be the sunshine addling my brain! Thanks for stopping by though and don’t forget to go to the LGS blog and see what my fellow designers have made for you. Hope to see your layouts entered this month!

Today’s The Day! S.W.A.T. Grand Opening!!

Welcome to the official launching of S.W.A.T Scrap Warriors Advanced Training! We are so excited to get going with our drills and basic training. Just to recap, we will have 2 Drills (challenges) per month. With each drill there will a prize that has been has donated by an amazing sponsor! Drills are issued on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month and you will have until the 25th of each month to add your project and a winner will be selected from both drills at the end of the month. If you participate in both challenges you double your chances of being a winner!
Just to whet your appetite, here’s what you are playing for …

Got your attention? Well then, without further ado, here is Challenge #1 – Its all about you – make a LO all about you and show the world who you are!

Here’s mine.
I have been working on a SMASH Book/Art Journal documenting my final year of my 30’s (…sigh…) and one of the lists I’d started several months ago was called “39 things I’ve Learned So Far”. I was originally going to put it into my 365 to 40 SMASH Book but decided to turn it into a layout for this challenge instead.
To create the back ground I trimmed a piece of white card stock to 11″ x 11″ and then wrote out my entire list on it. I wasn’t worried about covering anything up as it was my intention for this to be a back ground image. Everything else was just layered on top. I’ve been following along with the new Two Peas video series called Scrap Your Stash and the one that aired at the time of creating this layout challenged us to use Christmas papers and products on a non-Christmas layout. All the papers on this layout are Christmas ones! I’ve got some Dear Lizzy, Stampin’ Up, MME and probably something else that I can’t remember. Really fun to look at those papers for their colours, not their patterns or themes!!
Here are some detail shots.

My title – really using up all my letter stickers!!

Lots of layers of stickers and gems and brads really finish things off and make it fun!
Thanks for stopping by today. I hope to see you all participating over at SWAT! Oh, and if you’re interested in my list (39 Things I’ve Learned So Far) please leave your email address in the comments section below and I’ll email you a copy. I’m still hoping to turn it into a SMASH page … stay tuned!!
