A Sewing and Fabric Challenge

#the20project with Alison Day Designs Welcome back to my version of The 20 Project.

To find out more about The 20 Project please visit Shimelle Laine’s blog. This is her concept that I am using as inspiration to get my own projects finished while challenging myself along the way. Shaking up the ordinary processes. Working out the cobwebs. Rediscovering old products. It is all going to happen during this project!

Today the jar prompted me to use fabric on a layout – something I’ve done in the past, but I’ve still got a fairly substantual stash to get through so clearly I need to remember to use it more often.

Take a look at how things came together.

Sewing For Dummies

WOW Summer 2016 Edition

This week we are trying some sewing.

Wish me luck!

I’m serious! I am not the best sewer in the world and so this has the potential to end very badly!!

My Plan

  1. Get their creative juices primed by making a sewing box. The eldest was given one for her birthday a few years ago and the younger ones have decided to share a box. Phew! Only one mess to deal with then!
  2. Buy fabrics of their choice to create a super simple project with.
  3. Find a super simple project! This is proving to be harder than I thought but I’m not giving up yet.
  4. Go over the rudiments of sewing – tools involved, hand stitching techniques, sewing machine basics, etc.
  5. Let them loose!
  6. Drink heavily!

That’s all I have time for today as I have some serious mental preparation to do before attempting to teach these girls how to sew! Yikes!

What Happens When You Ink an Embossing Folder?

Make it Monday with Alison Day Designs2.png Welcome to another Make It Monday!

It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve managed to get a Make It Monday post up on a Monday! Ah, lazy summer days!

Today I’m taking inspiration from “one of the greats” – Jennifer McGuire. She’s got a fabulous YouTube channel and website that you have to check out!

One of her older videos popped up in the “suggestions for you” sidebar one day and it led down a bit of a YouTube rabbit hole. A fun rabbit hole to be sure, but one I probably shouldn’t have explored on that particular day!

It was this video that inspired the cards I made for today’s post.

See them come together in my own video below. Continue reading

Taking Inspiration From Shimelle Laine … Again!

#the20project with Alison Day DesignsWelcome to the first of 20 posts in which I take inspiration from Shimelle Laine’s newest class, The 20 Project, to inject some  life into my scrapbooking!

What is The 20 Project?

You’ll have to head over to Shimelle’s blog to read all about it, and if you want all the inside details, you’ll just have to take her class … but suffice it to say, it’s a way of taking twenty different prompts and using them as inspiration to make a layout. Those prompts may be wish list items of products to use or techniques to try, or they may be twenty different UFO’s (UnFinished Objects) that need to move out of your crafting space! Shimelle has her own jar of twenty prompts, I have mine.

In the video below I explain all this plus pull out my first prompt … and it’s a doozy! Check it out!

Cooking Lessons and a Recipe Share

WOW Summer 2016 Edition

Welcome to another Wednesday where I share something other than cards or scrapbook layouts.

This summer I seem to be sharing posts on “how to fail at teaching kids life skills” more than anything else. Sigh.

Last week I attempted to teach the girls basic kitchen skills. The lessons were going well for a bit. They liked the scavenger hunt through all my kitchen utensils and came up with some pretty creative uses for some of them! But once we came to the actual cooking part of the lesson plan I was met with a wall in the form of my 7 year old.

I shouldn’t have been surprised. This child will be expecting her cereal and milk to be poured for her at University! The title of Princess is not strong enough to convey how much of a grasshopper she is! Definite CEO material! Let the ordinary man scramble for every cent while she sits back and is handed stacks of cash on silver trays by oiled men in tunics. That Tongan flag bearer comes to mind!

Where did I go so wrong??

Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but not by much!

But back to the subject at hand.

In my research for the written material I provide my girls (yes, I probably should have been a teacher instead of a … whatever it is I am!) I came across instructions on how to boil an egg. I know, not rocket science, right? But hey, turns out I’ve been doing it wrong all these years! Continue reading

Making a Start With a Plan in Place!

Welcome to Make it Monday Tuesday!

In all honesty, I started this post on Sunday thinking I would have plenty of time to get everything done but … best intentions and all that! The flip side is, I have a plan! Maybe you didn’t hear me …

I HAVE A PLAN, PEOPLE!

I know, I know, it happens so rarely in my scrapbooking.

Are you okay? Do you need a minute?

Did you spit out your coffee all over the monitor?

I do apologize. Wipe it down and let’s continue.

My plan … well, I tell you all about it in the video below, but suffice it to say, it has to do with the album for our recent Disney Cruise. Continue reading

As The Inspiration Flows, The Cards Pile Up

Another kit bites the dust!

Yahoo!

Still working through my stash of Simon Says Stamp card kits. But I promise, I’ll be doing some actual scrapbooking this week! My fingers are itching to start documenting our recent Disney cruise. Now that my stomach has returned to normal I may even be able to journal about our experiences without the shadow of motion ickness (yes, that’s not a typo) looming over me.

But that’s for a future post … back to today.

Did you catch my August kit reveal video and the cute baby girl card I whipped up? The video is on my YouTube channel but the card can only be seen on my Facebook page. Just click on the link above and it will take you to that post on my page wall. While you’re there, hit the Page Like button so all of my posts can show up in your feed. The card doesn’t use a ton of product from the kit (it uses the stamp set, the die cut and a piece of the white card stock) as it was purely made because I wanted to test out that star die right away! It’s gorgeous! You’ve got to get your hands on one of these!!

At the beginning of my video I shared a couple of cards that are the focus of this post: cards made from the September 2015 kit.
