January’s Sketch for Practical Scrappers

It’s a new month, a new year for that matter, and we have a new sketch for you to use over at Practical Scrappers.

It’s another wonderful one! For the past many months the incredibly talented Liz Chidester has provided the Practical Scrapper Design Team – and you, our readers – beautiful layout sketches. I know I have created some of my favourite layouts using her sketches. She’s decided to step down to pursue other endeavours and we will all miss her on the team. Here is my layout and Liz’s last sketch for Practical Scrappers.

Snow Much Fun - a layout for Practical Scrappers

PS - Jan 2014 sketch

I used my December kit from Gossamer Blue which, much to my surprise, was quite devoid of winter themed products. No snowflakes to use on the layout but I substituted various circular elements in their place. The background paper could be just as easily used for a birthday or other party themed layout! Just goes to show the power of influence your photo can have on the products you use. AND that you can create a gorgeous (if I do say so myself) layout about a snowy winter’s day without using anything remotely winter-y!!

I love how much my subscription to Gossamer Blue has stretched me creatively. By forcing myself to use only what comes in the kit, I am constantly looking at the products in new ways. Here are some close up shots of my details.

I kept the title and journaling placement where Liz had it in the sketch as it really worked for my layout. The papers, while patterned, were not overly busy so I could easily write on them knowing it would be legible. The freedom of so much space allowed me to just keep writing until I felt I’d said everything I wanted to say too! The little piece of washi tape accented by two chipboard stickers, act as a nice stopping place for your eye.

Since there were no large round elements in the kit I used a 3×4 journaling card cut from one of the patterned papers in the kit. The sentiment on it matched my own reasons for creating the layout which is just as good as any large round sticker in my book!! I did find a smaller round sticker on the sheet included in the kit so that, along with another chipboard button finished off this particular embellishment grouping.

More strips of washi tape ground the couple of embellishment stickers up in the right hand corner. The globe was chosen for the sentiment, not because this has anything to do with travel!! I also added the ‘remember this’ tab to the photo. In Liz’s sketch there is a photo corner in this spot but I thought this worked a bit better for my story and my style. Oh, and a quick word about the doodled border. I love the look of a double line of stitching around people’s layouts but don’t have a functioning sewing machine. This is my answer. It is SO easy and a great way to finish off a layout!!

Okay, I think that’s all I have to say except that it is now your turn. I’d love to see what you create! Be sure to either leave a comment on the Practical Scrappers blog or on our Facebook page with a link to your project. Thanks and have a wonderful Tuesday everyone!
